Hi Mary,
Thanks for reaching out on EnableMe. We are sorry to hear about your dad’s strokes and the impact of his worsening behaviour.
Changes in emotions and personality are common after stroke. These can be impacted on further by cognitive and communication difficulties. It’s normal to experience strong emotions after stroke, however these emotional reactions usually get better with time. Longer-term emotional and personality changes where aggression or anger is involved, this includes shouting, are a problem. Fortunately there are treatment options available.
If you’re based in Australia we recommend calling our health professionals on StrokeLine 1800 787 653 to discuss the best options for you and your dad, based on his age and where you live.
A good starting point is to speak to your dad’s GP. Here are some resources and suggestions:
Mental Health Treatment Plan
Under Medicare’s Mental Health Treatment Plan, your father may be eligible for up to 20 sessions with a mental health professional (psychologist or psychiatrist) each year. They can assess your dad’s mental health and behaviour and make a plan. Your dad’s GP can make the referral.
1800 RESPECT
1800 RESPECT offers confidential information, counselling and support. Family violence includes repetitive behaviour that makes you feel scared or threatened. It can happen in any relationship.
