My best friend Jun had a stroke in March this year and lost his ability to speak. He was the best man at my wedding - we go way back, almost like brothers. When it happened, his family called me first. That call changed everything.
Jun's in the Philippines and I'm in Melbourne, which makes supporting him even harder. I visit when I can, but I often feel helpless and worry I'm not doing enough - or doing the wrong things. Watching someone who used to talk and laugh with you struggle to say a single word... I don't have words for it.
For stroke survivors here: What do you wish your friends understood about communication after stroke? What helped you feel supported vs. what felt frustrating or patronizing?
For carers and family: How do you support someone with aphasia from a distance?
I'm here to learn. Any advice would mean a lot.
