Food allergies

I had a massive stroke over 2 years ago, it was never found out why and the doctors said that there will be hidden problems.

One of them is food allergies and I am finding it a battle with food and spices I used to be able to eat. I am on daily antihistamine 180mg and carry a smaller does and epi pen with us at all times.

I average atleast one allergic attack a week last week there where 3 attacks and they are getting worse, we watch everything I eat but it is getting harder especially if we are out. I haven’t used the epipen yet as I am scared and worried that the adrenaline rush you get could trigger another stroke.

has anyone had to deal with this problem

thanks

Hey Yvonne,

I suggest that you also give the team on StrokeLine a call on 1800 787 653. They may have some advice for you too.

Hi Yvonne,

Thank you for your question on EnableMe. We recommend raising your concerns with your specialists i.e. Allergist and Neurologist. They have access to your medical history including stroke of unknown cause, and can discuss your concerns about having another stroke from the adrenaline, and the risks vs benefits of using adrenaline. From what we understand, a stroke from an Epipen is listed as a potential rare side effect. Having an individualised assessment is important and may help allay your fears. The neurologist can also discuss whether there is a link between your stroke and your allergies. This is not a common presentation after a stroke that we see on StrokeLine.

It is also important to work with the neurologist and allergist to manage both conditions and prevent an escalation in symptoms. From a stroke prevention perspective, keeping your BP under control, taking any prescribed medication and managing other risk factors is important.

It might be helpful to take a list of questions and concerns when you see the specialists to make sure they are addressed.

If you would like to discuss further, please don’t hesitate to contact us on 1800 787 653.

Warm regards,

Kath (StrokeLine)

Trust your body and nourish your body. Watch your life transform and be healthy. For good health, watch what you eat. You are not alone, me too always a mindful eater. I am sick and tired of being sick.

Very humble words coming from you, Lunadawn.

Yvonne I am anaphylaxis to nuts and codeine., I cannot even have cough mixture due to codeine problem.  I have not used epi-pen as hospital dealt with that. I have dysphasia and dysarthria as side effects From Stroke.   My taste buds have suffered. I no longer enjoy a cup of tea.

my GP and neurologist both helped deal with those problems.  Anaphylaxis did not cause  my stroke, that came via a hole in my heart that was closed up with surgery.    Take care Jenny

Hi Jenny

Thanks for your reply.
I know my stroke wasn’t caused by food allergies as the only allergy I had then was peanuts and I made sure that I didnt eat anything with peanuts.
the other food I am reacting to are food that I used to eat  before the stroke that’s what is so puzzling to doctors and myself, there are also food that I could eat before like fish and some vegetables, just the smell of cooked or uncooked food makes me gag and nauseous.

I had a major anaphylactic attack on New Year’s Day/night I didn’t check the sauce I was using for garlic it was sauce that I used to use all the time before the stroke and didn’t even think to look at the label. I ended up in hospital in the resuscitation area, the doctors and nurses acted fast. I was kept in overnight with a letter for my GP we were away at friends place interstate so we came home early.

I have an appointment on 29 with a allergy doctor to see if that can find out why I am having reactions. I am already on 180mg of antihistamine a day plus a smaller one if an attack starts, neither made any difference to the new year days attack, it’s a constant nightmare worrying that anything I eat could or might bring on an attack.
hopefully we get some answers as it frustrates me and my husband the unknown

I am so sorry to hear what are you going through @YvonneRussell. Have you tried to wake up each day to start thinking wellness, not illness?

When you become wellness-minded instead of illness-minded, you’ll start to create space for that wellness to manifest in your life. Always think positive and good things happen.
