Supporting my nan immediately after stroke.

Hi,

My nan is 86 and had a severe stroke a couple of weeks ago. She was such an independent lady and very active so it's hard to see her trapped, unable to speak, eat or use her right side. All I want to do is make her feel better/happy/content. I've taken her a photo album of her family, she enjoys flowers, and head massages. What else would she like?

Is there light at the end of the tunnel?

Hi Jo,

I am really sorry to hear about your Nan, you being there for her is very important. Do you want to give us a call on our free-call support service 1800 787 653?

We can take you though what support and resources that we can offer.

Hi Jo,

I'm so sorry to hear your Nan has had a stroke. Both of my grandfathers had strokes and I know just being there for them was much appreciated. What you've taken in sounds perfect. Other things to consider might be music if she has a favourite artist/band or radio station. If your Nan is tiring easily, keeping visits short and with just a few visitors at a time can help manage fatigue and ensure she gets the rest to help with her recovery. Chatting to the health professionals, like the nurse, physio, speech pathologist, occupational therapist and dietitian will also help you to decide if there is anything else appropriate.

It can be very challenging, particularly in these early days, so be sure to call us on 1800 787 653 if you need to chat or you can also speak with the ward social worker. Take things day by day. There are many resources on here that will help and we are here if you have other questions.

You may have already had a good look around enableme but this section might be a good starting point for you and your family.

Best wishes to your Nan in her recovery. She is lucky to have you.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply ladies. I really appreciate your help. I'll certainly give the line a call if I need more help. Its comforting to know you're here.

Our pleasure. Take care and reach out again if you need.

Hi Diana

Thank you, I'll have to have a look through the resources.

She's moved on to being able to eat puree now which I guess is good.

I can tell she's miserable; which I think is inhibiting her desire to work hard in rehab. We're looking for options to be able to bring her home and care for her there.

Although that would be more work for my mum we think nan would feel a lot better in her own home.

Trying to remain positive. But its hard.

Hi Jo,

Depression can be a really big issue for people after stroke. Would you like us to send you a depression after stroke DVD, so that you can watch it with your Mum?

Call us on StrokeLine 1800 787 653 to order your free DVD.

You might also like to reach out and chat with Jenny. Jenny is a stroke survivor in her 80's and would be happy to chat.
