Hello Paul
Thanks for reaching our on EnableMe. I am sorry to hear of your TIA and the ongoing issues you are experiencing with your speech.
In most cases TIA symptoms resolve in a short period of time, but we do hear of some people who experience ongoing effects. Did you undergo a MRI when you were diagnosed? TIA’s do not show up on MRI’s or CT scans, but having an MRI can rule out a minor stroke. You will hopefully get some feedback from others who have had similar experiences here on EnableMe.
Have you been to a TIA Clinic or neurologist following your TIA? If not I would suggest talking with your Gp about a referral. I would also be mentioning to your GP that you are experiencing ongoing symptoms and get them to check whether there might be any other causes for your speech problems. Have your speech problems got any worse, or have they been consistent since the beginning of September?
Have you been referred to a Speech Pathologist? I would suggest talking with your Gp about whether you might be eligible for a chronic conditions management treatment plan. If you are, you can access up to 5 sessions of allied health therapy such as Speech Therapy at Medicare rebated rate. You can then check with your GP if they could recommend someone locally. If you have Private Health Insurance extra’s you might also be able to access a Speech Therapist through your cover, just check with the Insurer first.
It would be good to talk with you more about what you are going through, so do feel free to reach out to StrokeLine on Ph 1800 787 653, or email us at strokeline@strokefoundation.org.au. We are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm AEDT.
Kind regards
Siobhan (StrokeLine)
Hey Paul,
Thanks for posting. I have had a TIA or two myself mate. That was Feb 2020. I have started writing down when I have vision loss, pain speech issues etc so I can give better feedback at my Neurologist appointments. Give them as much quality information as you can. Try to notice if your tired or have not eaten well which may lead to the speech issues being increased.
All the best with your recovery.
