My 58 yr old son had a stroke Dec 7 th and is now home from hospital. How can we establish if his brain has been affected? We are having problems getting him to accept help from NDIS and also he gets distressed even discussing these topics.
Will this also improve with time or does he need intervention?

Just to clarify our understanding - do you mean he has already been approved for NDIS services and but is having problems accepting the help they are offering?
Stroke can affect our thinking skills or cognition. This can include problems with orientation , memory, attention, problem solving, insight, etc.
A Neuropsychology Assessment may be required after a stroke to establish a treatment plan or to provide rehabilitation recommendations. A neuropyschologist can help point out which specific aspects of cognition or behaviour have been affected and correlate it to an area of the brain that has been injured. A neuropsychologist can determine someone’s ability return to work, study and driving and what support they might need. In more complex cases, a neuropsychological assessment can help determine if someone has capacity to make decisions on lifestyle and finances, or if an alternative decision maker may be required.
It is very normal to experience strong emotions after stroke, however these emotional reactions can get better with time. It may be beneficial for your son to discuss how he is feeling with his GP and determine if a mental health treatment plan is appropriate. If decided so, a psychologist can help someone manage difficult or overwhelming emotions or mood and can provide treatment accordingly. They can also help you if the survivor of stroke or their family are having trouble getting used to life after stroke.

Brain effected , yes , depends on the type of stroke , NDIS yes put in for it for funding , Hi , distressed is vey common from the brain injury , easily stressed out , NDIS is hard to get on unless you try Enable me to help fil out the endless paper work .NDIS is worth getting on but hard . Imrove , only timr will tell .
