I've read some encouraging things about stem cell therapy for stroke recovery, particularly as my husband is 9 months post MCA L stroke and is making little progress with speech. How would I go about finding out if there are any stem cell/stroke clinical trials in Australia or is something you can do privately?

It’s a good idea to discuss clinical trials with your husband’s neurologist. They are the best source of information.
