hello friends, I am 4 years post stroke and still doing weekly sessions of OT&PT but was wondering if any stroke survivors have had any improvements in physical deficits as a result of alternate therapies such as Ayurveda. I came across Krishnendu hospital and Punarnava hospital in Kerala which seem to have had positive results in treating post stroke deficits(physical). I intend to continue with OT&PT for however long it takes to try and recover most of what I had lost physically and am willing to try any oth rbtreatment that would also be worthwhile trying. Has anyone had any good results from any treatment other than the good old OT&PT? thanks for sharing
Hi Mahila,
The Stroke Foundation recommends evidence based therapy where research has demonstrated that the therapy is effective and doesn't result in any harm to the stroke survivor. The Stroke Foundation reviews the evidence for different types of stroke therapy and then produces a set of Clinical Guidelines for Stroke Management. These are currently being updated, with new guidelines set for release in July 2017.
We will post something here on enableme so keep an eye out!
In terms of alternative therapy, there is a lack of evidence to support the use Ayurveda therapy for stroke treatment. If you do decide to investigate Ayurveda or other forms of alternative therapy, we would strongly encourage you to speak with your doctor first. Alternative therapies may interfere with your medication, the OT/PT therapy that your currently undertaking, or result in adverse health outcomes.
If we can be of any further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact StrokeLine on 1800 787 653 (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm).
Best wishes in your recovery.

Although I am taking a break from it at present I had therapy from a Feldenkrais practitioner for over 12 months. I found it to be very helpful in regaining movement and coordination, far more useful for me than OT.

I have also found Feldenkrais useful. I have also found a visceral masseur useful to me.
This technique seemed to work on my mind as well as my body.
I have found the books by Norman Doidge (The Brain That Changes Itself and The Brain's Way of Healing) to be very valuable.

Hi Mahila
I know a masseuse who treats using Ayurveda massage i go to them myself so know the benefits. I have hip & back issues & i always come away from session feeling great unfortunately I don't go often enough. I'm sure if you continue your physio & OT sessions combined with massage it would assist you. The massage is for the muscle relaxation & the mind, worked in conjunction with physio strengthening & OT exercises it can't hurt to give it a try
