From Debbie: “Our Kelpie loves to play fight with my husband, he will 'bite' his left hand but will only lick his right hand which is the side that was affected by his stroke. He's tried everything to see if he will play fight with his right hand but won't. Is there anyone else who has a pet who has behaves like this?”
Hi Debbie, When I arrived home from hospital my German Shepherd, refused to have anything to do with me for about 10 days. Now she is back to normal and lives in my pocket. My daughters dog who is baby sat everyday, moved away without even wanting a pat or treat, so unlike her around Grandpa. However,once I had finished Rehab in the home, and was feeling almost like normal. This is the time when the dogs and cats decided I was OK to be around.
As a professional dog trainer\handler, from the German Shepherd, point of view, these dogs whilst fantastic detect minute changes in people, they are very cautious when dealing with people who may be ill or have a disability. Pretty much like humans except smarter, animals will give us a second change and don't really judge us, the way we do others.
Hope your pooch, comes round, they make a world of difference!

Yes Debbie I believe they sense something is amiss. I left hospital in February 2013 . Our lovely Scottie named Nessie sat by the wheelchair for long periods, from there she progressed to my knee. Sadly she died later that year. We now have a small dog with mixed heritage. He seems to know he needs to keep away from my feet when I am walking around. They are good therapy, for we survivors.
