Hi! I am currently navigating a return to work following my stroke at the end of August this year. To be honest, this has been one of the more difficult challenges I have faced. My GP and my care team have all said I am ready to return to work with a graduated return as is the usual practice. Unfortunately my employer (healthcare industry - non nursing) has declined my two GP certificates that outline a plan for a graduated return to work following my "non-work related stroke" (my employers words not mine). Whilst I understand their reasoning (only given to me after I asked for it), it is disappointing, having been with the employer for close to 20 years. They have told me that they are under no obligation to facilitate a return to work and cannot accommodate this for me. They say they cannot facilitate a return to work until I am 100% fit and ready to perform my duties in the way I did prior to my stroke, going so far as to say that I cannot perform my inherent duties.
Sorry to be a downer and I really hope that no one else has faced similar, but chances are that someone has. I don't really want to pursue legal side of things as it does not feel that that would be conducive to my recovery. However I'm looking into my rights and my options and trying to stay positive about it.
One thing stroke can give us is a new perspective on things like this. Yes, I'm disappointed, but I'm also fairly philosophical about it and am using the time at home to become more prepared for a return to work when the time is right, whether that is in my current role or a new one.
Thank you for reading. All the very best to you.
