Hello Garry
Thanks for reaching out. We can certainly understand the concern about how the NDIS changes will impact on everyone currently receiving the NDIS. We are pleased you have reached out and are asking these questions. I am sure there will be others who will have similar questions, so this is a great start.
The NDIS, which stands for National Disability Insurance Scheme, is the scheme run by the Australian government to provide funding for Australians living with disabilities. The NDIA, on the other hand, stands for National Disability Insurance Agency. The NDIA manages the NDIS. Funded by the Department of Social Services, and appointed by the Australian government, the NDIA is responsible for administering all NDIS funding. This means that the NDIS will not be replaced by the NDIA, but the changes will impact both the NDIA (in how it administers funds to the NDIS) and the NDIS by what services and supports are going to now be funded.
We cannot at this stage confirm the changes to the NDIS but the review is looking at streamlining the access and ensuring that services provided are reputable and appropriate. We do hear from many people that they find it difficult to find good quality support workers who have an understanding of stroke, or that the therapy components are high in costs. Hopefully any review can help better manage these issues.
It is expected that the NDIS will be releasing new funding models that allow for greater flexibility and choice. The review will also look at expanding the services that the NDIS provides. The NDIS currently provides support for a range of services, including daily living assistance, modifications to the home, and allied health therapy. Over the next year or so the NDIS is expected to expand its services to include new and innovative supports. This may include the introduction of new technology-based services, such as virtual therapy sessions and ongoing telehealth support. IT is also hoped that the NDIS may also provide increased support for mental health, helping participants to better manage their ongoing mental health and wellbeing. This is so very important for stroke survivors.
Once the Stroke Foundation knows more we will be letting our community know. We are certainly advocating to ensure that the NDIS can effectively and appropriately support the needs of stroke survivors throughout Australia.
