Hi All,

I just read an article in ABC Health Online called - Boosting your brain power as you age. It is about tips to ward off dementia.

It made me wonder what our community are doing in relation to brain training and neuroplasticity. http://ab.co/1Rd9S5E

Diana you have posted an interesting question. I look forward to interesting ideas .i play mah Jong regularly ,use iPad daily   ,both very challenging  to deal with.  I attend a once weekly Heart Moves gentle exercise group.both sides of my brain is challenged with this. Each member works at our own speed and ability.

My husband and I enjoy watching The Eggheads on T V  we test out our brains against theirs'

we do our best to ward off dementia. We hope!    Jenny

Diana  have I misunderstood your question? Were you referring to brain training exercises

available online.  Jenny

Hi Jenny,

It is a more general question.

Some people do brain training exercises, other people puzzles, others games with family etc.

I am interested in hearing what games and activities people have done, where they feel that they have gotten good results.

Exercise is also very important. A Facebook community member packs and unpacks her dishwasher everyday to retrain her brain, as she has upper mobility issues.

I play Lumosity and find the concentration for all the puzzles very rewarding, 23 years post stroke that happened when I was 22 years old and I still do not take brain function for granted ! Sue

Sue I have not heard of Luminosity. Shall Google it? Prior to stroke I hadplayed Mah Jong for 8 years so I will never give it up. There are over100 games to play. I know about 30.Remembering is a challenge. thankyou for message. Jenny

Hi Diana

I am a little late in responding. I had my stroke at end of January 2014 and it was not unitl I read David Roland's book 'How I Rescued My Brain' in July 2014 that I became aware of brain training exercises. David had used exercises from Posit Science, now known as Brain HQ.  I began my exercises in October 2014 and did them until mid July 2015 and due to a couple of health related factors stopped and have recently restarted them.  During this time I have kept statistics of my progress which clearly indicate the enormous improvent in my cognitive functions. I have no doubt the improvement is attributable to the brain training exercises.  Brain HQ also provide progress stats, however I choose to also maintain additional information including graphs. These exercises are fully backed by science and cover areas such as Attention, Brain Speed, Memory, People Skills, Intelligence and Navigation. Along with these aspects specialist areas such as driving are also covered.  I have recently read that Lumos Labs who provide Lumosity have had some bad press and fined for making incorrect claims about their product.  I am also aware that the benefits of Brain HQ are longer lasting than Lumosity.  I have no hesitation in personally recommending Brain HQ. Their website is excellent and well worth the look, you can undertake a free trial to get the feel of the exercises.  I intend to continue with the exercises and believe I can make further improvements to my cognitive functions.
