STROKE FOUNDATION: CONFERENCE ROOM
ABC BUILDING HOBART
21 NOV, 10AM
PRESENTATION BY MARCUS OTLOWSKI
The Stroke Foundation is delighted to announce that Marcus Otlowski will speak about his stroke and the ongoing recovery in Hobart on November 21st 2018.
Come and meet Marcus, other EnableMe community members, and the Stroke Foundation team. Listen and see Marcus’s story told with words and photos and participate in a question and answer session.
Marcus Otlowski lives in Japan with his two sons and wife. He teaches English at a national university. He loves hiking, surfing, riding, and swimming. Marcus’s English and Japanese are affected by aphasia. He had a stroke four years ago during a heart operation.
After his stroke, Marcus knew there were no English-speaking occupational or speech therapists in his city. Instead, a group of English teachers, using Skype, were his speech therapists. After a lot of work, Marcus got back into the classroom and began teaching again.
Marcus has always used storytelling in his classes even before his stroke. And so he found it and photography as one way to show the sense of having a stroke and dealing with aphasia to others. Each picture represents a slice of his life and journey since his stroke. Marcus’s photographs are thought-provoking, emotional and educational.
He believes it is vital that stroke and aphasia stories are shared, so we can all learn and help support others.
Venue accessibility: There is a ramp from the street, and a lift to the 2nd floor. The room is suitable for people using wheelchairs and scooters. Fully accessible bathrooms are available on another floor of the building. Staff will be available to help with way-finding.
