Bruce and Kelly

Hear about Kelly’s stroke from three angles – Kelly, her husband Bruce and the emergency call taker Sean, on the latest ESTA 000 - I am 000 podcast.

It was a typical Monday morning. Kelly got up to make her kids breakfast and went to get ready for the day. Only moments later, her husband Bruce found her in the bathroom, needing emergency help. #call000

Called them myself. My wife was overseas at the time. I knew what happened at the time. Don’t remember much after the phone call though.

My husband called the ambulance and paramedics where apparently there in no time.
because of the type of strokes I was having they didn’t know what the problem was, even in hospital it was two to three days before the doctors found out what the problem was and that was with the help of top specialist in Australia and England looking at all my tests and symptoms and 2 MRIs. I apparently was unconscious in this time have lost 4 days of memory, can’t remember talking to the paramedics nor the doctor or my husband being there.
It’s been 2 1/2 years and still no memory and when I woke up I couldn’t talk or walk or eat. The doctors have never found out what caused my strokes which is very upse

It was 3pm on 13th October 2004 & I'd been feeling "Not quite right". I was at home alone (I live alone....even now), tried to pick up a page of a newspaper & dropped it. Then a 2nd time, same thing. I sat down, felt heavy down 1 side & after a while tried standing. Fell in a crumpled heap & couldn't move my right side. I dragged myself through house for 23 & a half hours, eventually managed to reach mobile, pressed buttons & got my brother. Tried speaking but only managed grunts but he got the idea & called Ambos. I think he beat them but not sure just relieved someone was there.

It was too late for clot dispersing meds & I'd suffered a severe stroke, unable to speak, eat, drink, walk & my reasoning was a little off. Two days in Emergency because the doctors thought at 48 yrs old I was young for a stroke & they thought it was an embolism. Many tests & 1 sided conversations like do you take any pills? Nod my head, then a slow realisation he meant illegal pills & an agitated shake of my head as I tried to grab the stethoscope & indicate "Drs prescription only"? Hard to do when your off balance & paralysed down 1 side๐Ÿ˜.

Eventually they found problem....a Gynea operation allowed bacteria into my genetically faulty heart, a growth formed then 2 pieces broke off giving  me 2 strokes near the mid line of the brain. While the Drs investigated the stroke they discovered the faulty Aortic valve & a year after stroke came my 1st open heart surgery. Other heart surgery people call it "the zipper club".๐Ÿ˜

I still haven't worked out how I pressed a few random numbers & got my brother? He's not on speed dial or anything? Must have been my Guardian Angel๐Ÿ™๐Ÿค๐Ÿ‘

I walked into ED after initial symptoms and was told to organise my own MRI. After another episode and getting CT and then MRI, I walked back to the same ED a week later, finally admitted to stroke ward. Had other symptoms later and called 000 who were very helpful once they knew I had a previous stroke, ambulance siren all the way to ER, different hospital
