Work and Covid19

I have some concerns being a stroke survivor and working in a hospital during this crisis. I am in a non contact position, but not allowed to work from home.

I had a bilateral brain stem stroke almost 3 years ago. As long as I am not tired I can do most things but swallow water! Bubbles, lemon or coffee are my savior here. My exercise tolerance is also poor. After walking around the block, I slurred my words and limp until I have a kip.

I am back to working full time, but take Wednesdays off as leave (soon to run out). Should I be looking for a Dr cert to isolate or not? Other options?

Hi Steve,

Thank you for reaching out on EnableMe. As you mentioned, working from home is not an option for a lot of our stroke community, especially for hospital based employees.

Good hygiene is the best defence against against most viruses, including coronavirus. Even in a non-contact position, it is important that you are able to implement the current recommendations that include:

- Washing your hands frequently with soap and water before and after eating and after going to the toilet.
- Covering your cough and sneeze, dispose of tissues, and use alcohol-based hand sanitiser.
- Social distancing - avoid contact with others (stay more than 1.5 metres from people).

Discuss your concerns with your manager, as the hospital may have additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) available that you can access. Talking with your GP might also be helpful. People who have had a stroke should be aware that, just like with the flu, they are at a higher risk of severe symptoms and complications from coravirus, and taking the recommended steps to minimise the risk of infection is advised.

Don't hesitate to call StrokeLine 1800 787 683 to have a chat with one of our health professionals, or have a look at the Stroke Foundation Coronavirus update page for updated information: https://strokefoundation.org.au/en/News/2020/03/16/00/42/Important-Coronavirus-update-for-our-stroke-community

Warm regards,
