'When the person with the brain injury is high-functioning, like J, the extended family may see no need for help. She’s out of medical treatment. She walks, talks, and looks “normal.” She may even drive a car. Therefore, her recovery must be complete. So, why do you need help caring for her? This line of thinking often leads to the oft-used excuse for not helping, “You’re pampering her. Let her stand on her own two feet. She doesn’t need help. She’s just lazy and irresponsible.”

Oh dear - that does make me sad for everyone involved.

How can we assist these situations : gain knowledge of difficulties, the right supports are put in place and real honest awareness of what is going on for families, which is so hard to get to the bottom of at the best of times let alone when everyone is in crisis.

Hi Sue,

I was thinking that this would be a good topic of the next Weekend Conversation. How do you help carers? I know it was hard for my wife, sometimes it is still hard, but through talking an honest conversation with the family, near and far, about what is needed. I was so luckily to have a small group of friends to help with my rehab, or dealing with my depression, anxiety, and concerns of going back to work.
