Hi there,
It's been slightly over a year since my dad's stroke, which had left him paralysed on the right side of this body, due to a brain bleed on the left side.
We've had so many wins in the past year, with having him admitted to intensive rehab, covered by his private health cover - and it was thanks to the topics in enable me : Hidden cover in private health insurance that we pursued in finding a specialist rehab physician, and while we've had knock backs we didn't give up and finally found one that facilitated this process.
Since his stroke, my dad, 73, was able to recover so that he could drink and eat normal food and fluids again. He loves food so much - this meant so much. And he gained strength in his right side, and with the aid of therapists able to stand and walk with assistance.
However we had a set back just yesterday, where he was admitted into emergency and we've since found that he's had a few mini strokes (ischaemic?) due to clots.
At the beginning of the year in Jan 2017, when my parents had a follow-up appointment with the Neurologist post my dad's stroke in Sep 2016, they were told that there was little else that could be done and no further follow-up appointments were necessary.
However, I'm now saddened to realise that despite everything we've done for my dad - his blood pressure is always normal, whether at rehab or at the nursing home, he was under good care, this blood clots have now caused mini-strokes where by, he is now on thickened fluids and food, we can hardly understand his speech, and he may now have some weakness on his left leg.
It's devastating with the setback and we'll be catching up with the stroke team tomorrow morning to find out what their intervention will be.
My query is - what is the process that we can have check-in visits to a neurologist? I just feel that had the neurologist not dismiss him at the beginning of the year, and we were told that we could have check-ups - this return of a stroke would have been preventable.
Looking forward to hear any advice.
Thanks.
Sam
