The EnableMe community is all about helping each other to get the best out of your recovery, rehab or life after stroke.

👌🙂👍

It would be great to have a thread with top advice all in one place to motivate and inspire.

What is the one piece of advice (or tip) that has helped you the most?

Hi Diana

My stroke was only 12 days ago buy so far the two important pieces of information have been "move it or lose it" and "Rome wasn't built in a day"

The first is second nature to me , the second not so much! :)

I would have to agree with "move it or lose it" and that doesn't necessarily mean you are doing the moving, it could be assistive equipment or someone else. You have to move every part throughout the day. That also means when I was bed bound, my legs barely rested and when I rested the scuds kept going. It also meant that every person that sat beside my bed moved my arm for me constantly. She is a tough, relentless road but worth it.

From a physio while I was struggling with fatigue - "you are today what you did yesterday."

From Jenny Ferrier

This is a tough one as every stroke and recovery is different. But after five years of my journey I had to take stock and be honest with myself! All in all, I've lost a lot (short-term memory, a lot of friends, work, etc.), but I also gained a few things (eye sight restored, walking, driving, reasoning). I'm alive and given how serious my stroke was, it is an overarching argument beating everything else... In the words of my Neurosurgeon (3 months after my stroke): 'Michael, last time I saw you in ICU, I didn't think I would see you again - alive!

I'm lucky to have my family with me and I look ahead and see what else there is... Let's not forget what we've achieved, each and everyone of us! Take care!

Best piece of advice: 'give yourself time'...

Encouragement and support may help you keep going.

Great words people!

Michael, I take your point about everyone being different. It could be hard to chose just piece advice - so I will open it up at good pieces of advice you've received. 🙂👍👌
