Pain in stroke? Participants required for online research project exploring pain in stroke.

I would be happy to participate in this research. how would you define 'pain' for the purpose of your study, Is it pain as we new it before the stroke?Is it to do with subluxation? Or is it  t some discomfort in the upper limb caused by a specific trigger?In my case thankfully, I don't have a painful upper limb, ie on the affected side. However, I do feel pain should for example I knock my arm on something or happen t happen to sit on my hand accidentally when rolling out of bed. I also feel the 'stretching-pain' when I stretch my upper limb. I am therefore keen to know what this research defines as pain so as to not adversely impact your findings.

Hi Mahila, thanks for your enquiry and your willingness to participate, it is greatly appreciated.  With regards to your "type" of pain questions, the study has a very carefully structured questionnaire that will "pick out" all of that type of information for us to look at (with regards to nature of any pain experience or altered sensation, and much more).  We are essentially interested in getting as many people with stroke to participate, and then be able to separate the data into various profiles involving pain, sensory abilities, etc. With that in mind, I encourage you to participate (providing you are still keen), as you will certainly not adversely affect our results.  At the end of participation, there is also an area to provide feedback if you would like to, which I check daily. I need to stress here though that as participation is anonymous, I am not able to respond to that feedback, but people are certainly able to email me directly (my contact is listed on the information page of the study).

Hi Brendon,

I am not sure whether I am suitable for your study. Perhaps I could detail my case briefly. I had a spontaneous tearing of Vertebral artery (2cm) near C2 at the base of the brain whilst playing golf. Resulting in a cerebellum stroke after 45 mins, followed by another tear at same location 5 days later and another stroke. Third tear and stroke one month later resulting in a brain stem stroke. As a result I have 8/10 nerve pain on my affected side since. We have established that pain is phantom and not related to actual nerve damage.

Hi Craig, thanks for your note and your details. Yes, we would be keen for you to participate, and it will provide valuable information for us (there'll be a few questions for you to answer in the survey).

For some reason though today (Friday 6th May) the survey component seems not to be working properly. We are getting it looked at, so it will hopefully be back fully operational for the weekend.
