The National Stroke Foundation has joined the global campaign to respect the health rights of stroke survivors and carers and give everyone a better chance of life after stroke.
At the heart of this campaign is the Global Stroke Bill of Rights. The document developed by World Stroke Organization, in partnership with stroke survivors and their carers, promotes the rights and aspects of care that are important for ALL stroke survivors. It sets out the right of each person to:
- Receive the best stroke care
- Be informed and prepared
- Be supported in their recovery
Globally one in six people will experience a stroke in their lifetime. 17 million people experience stroke each year and for more than 6 million individuals that stroke will be fatal. Many survivors are left with short or longer-term disabilities and stroke is now the leading cause of disability worldwide. In Australia there are an estimated 420,000 stroke survivors and around 65 percent of survivors are left with an ongoing disability. Of these survivors around 80 percent are currently not having their needs met.
It is time that each and every individual behind these global stroke statistics has access to all the elements of appropriate stroke care, so that everyone has the best possible chance of life after stroke.
With the help of the WSO, National Stroke Foundation is calling on the government to rise to the challenge and ensure that the Bill of Rights is fully supported and implemented.
The Global Stroke Bill of Rights was developed by a group of stroke survivors and caregivers from each region of the world, including Australian John Damrow. Their work was informed by input from thousands of others from different regions, countries and cultures who completed surveys saying what they thought was most important to stroke recovery. The document sets out priorities for all aspects of care and recovery and is intended to support individual patients and caregivers in their direct discussion with professionals about their own treatment and care, as well as to provide an advocacy tool to raise awareness of the impact of stroke and improve the services and information they receive.
National Stroke Foundation is working to ensure that the Global Stroke Bill of Rights is reflected in the treatment and care provided in Australia.
