Can someone please help unpack the recent announcements and media coverage in the wake of the corona virus pandemic with regard to their impact on stroke survivors

i) Are stroke survivors classified as ‘at risk’ group for corona virus disease like the elderly and those with underlying health conditions of the respiratory system?

ii) For those on the NDIS, and using the services of aged care or disability services suxh as personal care’ to help with daily living activities due to disabilities caused by stroke, can we expect these suppliers to be open and providing these services or are they classified as non essential services and as such will they shut down business from midday today leaving us without the personal care assistance/services which will now most likely become the responsibility of family members?

ii) what else if any are the implications of this pandemic on stroke survivors? and most importantly, is thete help available?

Thanks for posting your questions. Here are some answers for you:

1) People who have had a stroke should be aware that, just like with the flu, they are at a higher risk of severe symptoms and complications from coronavirus. This is the most important thing to know. For more, read this statement.

2) Services are still available. Visit My Aged Care (for people over 65 years) and the NDIS (for people under 65 years) for information. My Aged Care has a fact sheet with good advice for older people about home care and health services. The NDIS has updates for their participants. Both My Aged Care and NDIS are working to make sure services can continue to be delivered and that they are safe and effective.

3) StrokeLine is operating as normal and is here to help all stroke survivors and anyone who supports them - partners, family, friends, carers. Our team includes occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech pathologists, social workers and nurses. We're available 9am to 5pm AEST.
