Sport after stroke

I am really missing being able to participate in group/competition sports after my stroke. I am still struggling with movement on the right side of my body, but would love to get involved in some sort of organised group sports.

Does anyone know of any groups or organised sports in Melbourne that would be suitable to people with varying disabilities?

Hi Bonnie,

I suggest that you call StrokeLine on 1800 787 653.

If you're interested in playing golf, check out Empower Golf. They run sessions around Australia.

In Melb, they run sessions at Sandhurst Golf Club near Patterson lakes. They teach you how to play golf using one arm.

I hope that you get some other suggestions.

Hi Bonnie,

Here are some comments from the Facebook community too:

Tim Roadley

Kayak or canoeing in a double boat. I am the coach of the Yarrawonga Mulwala Amateur Canoe Club in Yarrawonga may be a bit north of Melbourne but there is other clubs in the Yarra River, Footscray Canoe Club and Paterson Lakes they may be able to help.

Carly Findlay

Try Louis Rowe and Rosie Jenes who both play ball sports. I am a rollerskater and love it - have seen people use mobility aids while skating on Instagram!

Will Hurle

I am 4 years post I have attempted lawn bowls with some success. Though there is a big walking component if your not careful.

Kymberley Fedrick

My husband has taken up walking football for over 50s with a community group. Was reluctant at first but is the highlight of his week now. Participating in a tournament next weekend.

Not sure if it’s a national organisation or Queensland based.

Carly might have some local ideas. She is a keen roller skater and well connected in the Melbourne area x

In Sydney they have accessible indoor sky diving 😱 ... that blew my mind a little !
