I've had a question recently from a 25 year old person who I am working with that I've been unable to answer. They are 6 months post stroke and seeking life insurance and are having trouble finding a provider that would provide full coverage (TPD, Income Protection & Death).
Just wondering if anyone has any personal experience or recommendations?

Hi, just wondering if you found an answer to this question as I am going through this now myself? I am fully functioning yet cannot get (TPD, Income Protection & Death) in NSW.

Thanks to both of you for reaching out, this is a question that has come up a few times through EnableMe and StrokeLine. We have not been able to find a specific provider that will provide life insurance for stroke survivors, although we do have information on travel insurance companies. There are companies that may provide insurance cover, but there is likely to be an increased premium associated with this.
We have spoken to one stroke survivor who has contacted an insurance broker to help find an appropriate insurer who will cover their previous medical history, so this might also be an option for you. There are also insurance brokers that focus on finding life insurance for those with medical conditions. Some financial counsellors may also be able to help find you appropriate insurance cover. There will be costs associated with these services.

A pre existing condition insurance companies run. Personally I think it’s discrimination.
Maybe you could should check their Super as most have insurance for death and PTD and some income protection on it already. It may only be small but it’s there.
Its another unfair side effect of having a stroke. So wrong.
I am going through this scenario at the moment. I had a major stroke just over 2 years ago, and have recently been diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder which basically means I get similiar symptoms of another stroke due to high anxiety, depression and stress which as you know occurs a lot more often in stroke victims. I had another turn last night. But due to this situation I can no longer do the work I been trained to do as I was in IT and did things like Project Management and Management Support due to the high stress levels working in the field. The fact is I am going through the process and it looks like I will get my TPD, as I will have this issue forever.
I myself can't do the work I used to, if you are unable to attend the work which you were employed I feel you have a case. I have been going through my Super..
Not sure if helpful however I have been able to access my income protection which is attached to my super. This is valid for 2 years as a monthly payment. I had to wait a 60 day non payment waiting period and then wait a further month to be paid in arrears. I had only been in my new job 1 month prior to stroke and am only just over 3months post. The financial hardship alone made me extremely depressed as it's a lot to encounter when you don't have the capacity to face alone but have to have an income if you are single, no savings and need to live, eat, heal and not stress as it adds to the negative side of what you're already experiencing.
I wish anyone else facing this, strength to get to a peaceful resolution so that you can stress less and heal.
It's definitely a don't know til you experience it kinda thing!
