Managing bladder expectations

I don't have incontinance, per se. I do have a suddenly weak bladder that can't hold. I can go for weeks okay, then have a bad week. Presumably the messages don't get thru. Things are slightly better than last year. Gradually things are improving. I'm only 2 1/2 years post-stroke so I'm hoping that's the trend. Anyone have this experience?

Hi Rachel,

Urge or stress incontinence can be common after a stroke. Changes such as weakness in the muscles that control your bladder or changes to your sensation may mean that you experience a sudden and strong urge to urinate. Many continence issues after stroke can be treated or better managed so incontinence can improve. Because there are many different factors that can contribute to incontinence, it's important that you seek help form a health professional to establish a suitable management plan.

The Continence Foundation of Australia has a free helpline (1800 33 00 66) where you can speak with a trained continence nurse for advice and education. You can also find them at www.continence.org.au

There are also a number of resources and previous continence related discussions under the incontinence resources folder: https://enableme.org.au/resources/incontinence

Please do not hesitate to call us on StrokeLine (1800 787 653) if we can be of any further assistance.

One thing that really helped me post-stroke with leakage was going to the doctor and using this magnetic chair; you just sit on it and passively strengthens your pelvic floor muscles! that solved all my bladder leakage problems. originally, mother had applied for me to get some aids with like pads and whatnot, but after i used the magnetic chair i was able to take myself off this list. just a warning, though: the chair is really noisy; it may sound like you're under machine-gun fire! ;)

Thanks so much! I'll def investigate!
