Assoc Professor Bruno Meloni and Dr Adam Edwards will talk about the latest in Stroke Research and potential treatments.
Associate Professor Bruno Meloni heads the Perron Institute’s Stroke Laboratory Research which aims to develop a treatment to minimise brain damage after stroke.
A/Professor Meloni will discuss the promising discovery by Perron Institute researchers that a peptide (protein) rich in the amino acid arginine is highly neuroprotective and can limit brain damage after a stroke if administered early. Dr Edwards' research has shown the same treatment could protect the brain cells of vulnerable newborn babies affected by lack of oxygen during or immediately after birth.
The exciting potential of this treatment currently being developed is that it could be delivered to patients by first responders.
The need for therapeutics, such as those potentially being developed by the Perron Institute is critical. Stroke is Australia’s second biggest killer after coronary heart disease and a leading cause of disability. One in six people will suffer from a stroke during their lifetime.
This seminar will go for one hour, with a Q and A session, followed by coffee and tea.
