Hi guys,
I suffered a stroke on the weekend which has affected my occipital lobe resulting in homonymous hemianopia. I am 26 years old and wasn't aware at the time that I had actually had a stroke and left it for 3 days before seeking medical advice.
They think I have lost 50% of my vision - just wondering if anyone else has had this and if any of their vision was restored with time??

I'm very sorry to hear of your hemianopia Lucy particularly given your age, I'm an optometrist with a quadrantanopia, the lower half of your losss, sadly our deficits very unlikely to improve unless a magic bullet is developed in the future, as you would have been told driving out for us, sorry no good news, only real compensate mechanism is scanning often to affected side, frustrating trying to explain the problem to others, colin

Sorry to hear that and sorry to say welcome to my world. The link below is a blog I wrote for the NSF a while back, you might want to have a read. The advice I was given at the time was that if there is no improvement in the first 6-8 weeks further improvement is unlikely and this has proven to be true.

Hang in there, I suffered the same stroke, and like you did not seek treatment for several days.
My visual changes scared me so much, I also had changes in my colour perception, which upset me.
Follow your doctors advise, I rested up like crazy( which I had no choice, I found myself needing to sleep during the day which is something I would never have done.) I do think this is the way the body shuts down to "repair". Post stroke I started juicing and eating really healthy to ensure my body had all the nutrients required. I don't know if it made any difference to my recovery but I improved! My colour perception eventually came back and so did my peripheal vision. My lasting issue is with night time driving and light sensitivety. Stay positive.
