Dear all,

I see that there are quite a number of younger people here who have had a stroke/strokes. I had one in July this year at age 29. I don't have the common risk factors for it. It appears that I may be having recurring strokes/TIAs since. I have been told to see a stroke specialist but I am specifically looking for a doctor who has seen other young adult stroke patients and has an understanding of some of the less common causes (PFO etc).

I would be grateful if anyone is able to recommend a specialist doctor that they have had a positive experience with (ie. they follow up, investigate thoroughly, listen), and in particular has seen other young people with stroke? I live in Melbourne - so anywhere in the CBD, Parkville, Carlton, Fitzroy, Collingwood, areas - or even further out in the suburbs for the specialist.

Additionally, if you know of any good GPs who have been able to manage a complex situation and coordinate "the team" well.

It seems I have been having bad luck in terms of the lack of follow up and coordinated care so I would appreciate any suggestions!

Thank you for getting in touch with StrokeLine. I am sorry to hear that you have had a stroke and are now having difficulty getting the answers and follow up that you need. Unfortunately, we here at the Stroke Foundation cannot recommend specific medical practitioners; however, I will point you in the direction of our 'Getting Good Healthcare' page on Enable Me (can be found here) which discusses how to go about finding the right GP and Neurologist for you, some tips around self-advocacy and other forums and blogs related to this topic. One way of getting the professional help you're after is to search Neurologists and GPs in your area and take a look at their web page, most GP practices in particular will outline the particular interests of their practicing GPs. Look for key words such as neurology, stroke, rehabilitation, ABI, prevention etc. Also when you call to make an appointment don't be afraid to ask for someone that will be able to help you with your stroke related queries. Hopefully other stroke survivors have been in contact with you and pointed you in the right direction in terms of their experiences with GPs and Neurologists that may be helpful to your situation.
