My mom has had a stroke and struggles with sleep. She can’t seem to get comfortable no matter what we try. Also, she sometimes can’t seem to relax enough to even close her eyes despite being tired and wanting to go to bed.

Can anyone refer me to articles or share helpful experiences that may help?

Hello Rachel,

We are sorry to hear about your mother's stroke and difficulties sleeping. Changes to sleep post-stroke can be common, however, it is always important to speak to a doctor about your mother's experiences.

You may find some general information on sleeping post-stroke on our sleeping resource on EnableMe. You may also find information on sleep issues after a brain injury like stroke, on the Synapse website here.

Difficulties sleeping can cause stroke survivors to become more fatigued post-stroke. According to the Living Clinical Guidelines for Stroke Management on fatigue, your mother may wish to be screened for sleep-related breathing disorders or other impacts. While there is insufficient evidence to guide practice, possible interventions could also include cognitive behavioural therapy (focusing on fatigue and sleep with advice on regular exercise), exercise and improving sleep hygiene.

There are many ways to improve your Sleep Hygiene, including obeying your body clock, improving your sleeping environment, avoiding drugs, and relaxing your mind with various techniques. The Sleep Health Foundation in Australia also has information regarding sleep and tips to improve sleep hygiene.

If you and your mother do not live in Australia, we would also suggest reaching out to local stroke and sleep associations that may be able to provide more localized information and support.

If you would like more information, please do not hesitate to contact us on StrokeLine 1800 787 653 or email strokeline@strokefoundation.org.au. We are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm AEST.

Warm regards,

Karina
