Hi Pjs022,
Thank you for your enquiry on enableme. I am sorry to hear about your stroke.
Recovery, particularly when it comes to vision can be challenging to predict as each individual and stroke is so different. Improvements with vision can occur in some cases, although it does tend to be a little different to the improvements seen in other areas such as arm or leg weakness for example. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to read our page about vision and senses and our fact sheet on vision after stroke.
You might like to read this blog post about vision restoration written by another stroke survivor. Adrian who is a young stroke survivor shares his honest story about living with visual impairment after stroke and how it has affected his life on his blog.
You might like to check out the Read Right or Eye Search programs online. While they state they won’t necessarily improve your visual field, they aim to improve your visual function.
When was your last visual fields test done? It is worth seeing the ophthalmologist or optometrist for at least annual reviews as they can monitor your vision for any improvements to see if you regain enough of your visual field for driving over time. We do hear of positive outcomes from time to time but it is a bit of a watch, wait and see unfortunately. It must be very difficult living rurally and not being able to get about. Depending on where you live and your age, there may be some options for transport via NDIS or the council if you wanted to discuss further.
If you would like to talk in more detail, feel free to give us a call on StrokeLine on 1800 787 653. We are open Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm, and we would be happy to have a chat with you.
Best wishes,
Meredith (StrokeLine)
