Hi David,
Thank you for your question. Yes a CT scan and often an MRI scan is completed after suspected stroke. In some cases repeat scans will be arranged if indicated, however this is on a case by case basis. Recovery is generally based on progress from a functional perspective rather than solely on the scan. The scan may show minimal changes, however the stroke survivor may be rapidly improving due to neuroplasticity. If there is a deterioration in someone's neurological state then a repeat scan would definitely be indicated. Initial imaging is used to determine the type of stroke (clot or haemorrhage) to guide medical intervention, the location and the extent of damage as well as involvement of surrounding tissue, including any swelling.
If you were eager to have a repeat scan you could request this via your neurologist or GP. It will depend on whether they see it as beneficial or if it would add anything to your treatment. I imagine they would be unlikley to complete repeat scans routinely if it was deemed unnecessary or of little benefit.
I hope this helps answer your question. If you wish to discuss please call StrokeLine on 1800 787 653.
Best wishes,
Simone (StrokeLine)
