Hello Kay
Thank you for your query regarding the BTC for the MeRT Therapy for your sister. The Brain Treatment Centre Australia has three locations in Queensland, Brisbane the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. We cannot give any guidance on whether the treatment has been helpful to others, but you will hopefully get some feedback on this post. We are not aware of any evidence about whether MeRT is effective for stroke survivors. Brain stimulation therapy like this is still considered experimental, and our Clinical Guidelines recommend that it should only be used in the context of scientific research.
I would recommend having your sister speak with her Gp and neurologist about their thoughts on this, in case there are any adverse reactions that could impact on her ongoing recovery. There are some contraindications that your sister should be aware of, including implants such as a pacemaker or defibrillator.
It sounds like the MeRT therapy is based loosely on neuroplasticity in regards to developing new neural pathways, which is something we talk to many stroke survivors about. We have a great podcast on neuroplasticity which you can listen to here.
Do feel free to give us a call on StrokeLine and we can talk with you more regarding MeRT or neuroplasticity. You can contact StrokeLine on Ph. 1800 787 653 and we would be happy to talk with you.
Best wishes
Siobhan (StrokeLine)
