Hi Janette,
I’m so sorry to hear about the two strokes and the ongoing pain you experience. Pain is unfortunately common after stroke with such debilitating effects.
There is lack of evidence to support Bowen therapy after stroke. The Stroke Foundation reviews the evidence for different types of stroke therapy and then produces a set of guidelines. You may like to read them here: Clinical Guidelines for Stroke Management. Pain is discussed on pages 101-102. These guidelines are being updated with new guidelines set for release in July 2017.
If, however, you do wish to pursue Bowen therapy, we would recommend speaking with your GP first. It would also be worth asking the therapist whether they’ve had experience working with stroke survivors.
Have you been assessed by a pain management team? If not, your GP can make a referral for you. They would assess your pain and suggest suitable treatment.

Please don’t hesitate to ring in you’d like to discuss this further (1800 787 653),
Wishing you all the best,
Lisa (StrokeLine)
Hi Janette
I had bowen for last 10 plus years for back pain and have found it most beneficial. Mind you it to took me a while to find a Bowen person that suited my needs and fortunately I have found 3. 2 in Qld and one in SA who originally lived where I do.
Not had Bowen since my stroke but am going to soon being a believer in Bowen. However I have not got pain like you, except back and legs which had for years before my stroke.
I will be taking Lisa advice and looking up her references the more info the better.
Good luck and may you find some relief.
Jim
