Hi Linda,
We are so sorry to hear about your dad's recent stroke. It is positive to hear he is starting to recover from his chest infection, which could also be contributing to his drowsiness.
Stroke recovery depends on a number of factors; the severity of the stroke, the location of the stroke, type of stroke (clot or bleed), previous levels of function and medical history. At the same time, 14 days after a stroke is still very early days to get a clear picture of how someone may recover. It sounds like your dad is still quite medically unwell at this stage and ensuring he recovers from the chest infection and is getting sufficient nourishment via the NG tube is the priority.
We suggest keeping the lines of communication open with the hospital staff and treating doctor. If you have specific questions around his treatment or care they will be best placed to answer them. Hopefully over the coming days your dad continues to improve and become more alert so he can be assessed by the therapy team (physiotherapist, speech pathologist, occupational therapist).
It must be so tough for you and your family right now. If you would like to discuss your dad's situation further or receive additional support, please don't hesitate to call us on StrokeLine on 1800 787 653.
Best wishes to you and your dad,
Simone (Occupational therapist for StrokeLine)
