Do you have an experience or advice regarding tendon release surgery of the hand?

These are questions the stroke survivor really needs to directly address with the surgeon as it depends on what the surgery will involve. I can’t imagine he would see active return of movement as a result of the surgery, it would be as you say more to improve passive range, aesthetics, ease in dressing, skin integrity and hygiene.

It would be interesting to see if any other stroke survivors on Enable Me have had a tendon release for contractures post stroke and whether they thought the surgery was worth it. 

Personally I see surgery as a last resort. I'd be looking at Botox or other chemical muscle relaxants first. Botox is only temporary but it should help you see what will happen once the contractures are released. I've found with a combination of a series of botox injections and passive stretching my hand is able to release quite well and does not seem to get as tight as it used to, although it's variable with my fatigue levels etc. A limited amount of botox for upper limb contracture is covered by medicare sofind a rehab specialist who cam prescribe and administer it before committing to the surgery. You can always do the surgery afterwards if the botox is not effective.
