Hello KBL
Thank you for reaching out on EnableMe.
I am sorry to hear of your dad’s stroke. Is he still in hospital at the moment? If so, it is best to ask his treating team their recommendations. His current treating team will need to make the referral, and many hospitals will have processes for where their patients are sent when needing rehab.
There are many hospitals in the Brisbane area that provide rehabilitation after stroke, both public and private. The private options would be available dependent on whether your father has private health insurance and his current level of function. StrokeLine cannot recommend one facility over another, as it will depend on the hospital your father is currently admitted to, his current level of function, and his location.
As mentioned, I would recommend speaking to his current treating team, and ask them where they are thinking of referring him to. This would be the best place to start. Rehabilitation can be very dependent on the goals of the stroke survivor, and the impacts your Dad is experiencing after his stroke.
We would be happy to discuss this in more detail if you'd like to give StrokeLine a call. This can be a challenging time when waiting for the next steps for your Dad. You can contact StrokeLine on Ph 1800 787 653, and we are open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm AEST.
Warm regards
Siobhan (StrokeLine)
If your dad has the speech problem called aphasia, the Queensland Aphasia Research Centre in the RBWH STARs building has plenty of support.
