Hi,
In terms of types of leg splints, some splints are available ‘off the shelf’: i.e. they can be bought in a shop or through an orthotics company. Other splints will need to be custom-made. Physios are often involved in trialling and fitting simple splints, however generally an orthotist will need to be involved in fitting a customised splint. If you are still having therapy, I would suggest having a chat with your physio regarding recommendations for where to go for your splint. If a therapist has suggested you use a splint or orthosis, they might be able to provide a recommendation of who to use to provide this.
We cannot provide you with any specific recommendations, but some public hospitals have orthotists that you can see in an outpatient department for free, you might like to give the Blacktown Hospital a call and speak with them directly. You may also need a referral from your GP.
If you are arranging a splint through a private orthotist, you may be eligible to receive some funding from an Aids and Equipment scheme to pay for this. There is a different equipment scheme in each state. You can read more about what is available in NSW here. You can also search for local private orthotists here.
I hope this is of some help, you might also like to give us a call at StrokeLine, and so we can discuss the type of splint you are looking for, or the reason for the recommendation, in more detail. You can contact StrokeLine on Ph. 1800 787 653.
Best wishes
Siobhan (StrokeLine)
