Hi Meg,
We do get a number of enquiries about stroke survivors who have holes in their heart and enquiries about whether they should be closed. The GORE occluder is a specific treatment option for closure. Other stroke survivors may have had this but I would suggest discussing the risks and benefits of this with your neurologist, and to also consider a second opinion as different specialists have varying opinions.
Currently, as per our Clinical Guidelines for Stroke Management 2010, there is still no firm evidence that closing the hole is of benefit, which is why some specialists are reluctant to perform the procedure. Here is some more information from our Clinical Guidelines which are in the process of being reviewed: Clinical Guidelines - PFO management It will be interesting to see if evidence has changed regarding closure in our updated guidelines.
Please don’t hesitate contacting us on StrokeLine to discuss further (1800 787 653, AEST).
Best Wishes,
Lisa (Speech Pathologist for StrokeLine)
