Has anyone out there suffered a lateral medullary stroke? Would like to connect with anyone who has any knowledge of this devastating stroke.

My husband had a large medullary stroke, wiping out most of his right side of medulla. His deficits are many but some have improved, others I'm very worried about.

Hi Julie

Thank you for reaching out on EnableMe. We are sorry to hear about your husband’s stroke and his ongoing difficulties.

There are a number of others on EnableMe who have either had, or have friends or family, who have had a medullary stroke. Stroke recovery is different for everyone and the post stroke symptoms are dependent on the location and severity of the stroke. It is good to hear that you have noticed some improvements.  It would be worth discussing your ongoing worries with your husbands treating rehabilitation team, or his neurologist.

We are not sure if you have read the responses from a question posted previously about a lateral  medullary stroke, but you can read these at https://enableme.org.au/Users/Profile/My-Blogs/View-Blog?blogId=48f0b290-9fec-434a-bf2f-8e6183d12f24. The Facebook group mentioned may also be a good form of support to you and your husband.

We would encourage you to give StrokeLine a call, to talk further about your husband’s recovery. StrokeLine could also help find a local stroke support group where you could meet and talk with others who have faced a similar situation. The contact details for StrokeLine are Ph. 1800 787 653, available Monday to Friday (9am- 5pm), or strokeline@strokefoundation.org.au.

Wishing you and your husband well,

kind regards

Shraeya and Siobhan
