Hi Karen,
Firstly, sorry to hear about your stroke.
All medications carry the risk of side effects in some people. You need to see your Doctor to discuss the results of your recent blood tests, ongoing management and stroke prevention. Prescription of statins following stroke, regardless of cholesterol levels, is recommended. There is high level evidence that statins lower cholesterol and prevent further strokes. However, given the side effects you're experiencing, you will need to discuss ongoing medication options with your treating Doctors.
The Stroke Foundation doesn't recommend anyone come off their prescribed medication without liaising with their Doctors.
If you wish to discuss further, don't hesitate to call us on StrokeLine on 1800 787 653.
Best wishes,
Simone (StrokeLine)
Hi Simone, thanks for your reply. I wasn't intended to go off medication but was curious if this was one of the side effects. There is a delay in getting in to see the specialist but in the meantime my GP is conducting further tests which can be relayed when I finally see the neurologist.
Saw the neurologist today and yes the statins are causing the abnormal liver function readings so they have been stopped. Further investigations show an underlying liver disease, so it actually was good thing as the disease can at this stage be maintained without progression. Silver linings!
Hello ....re high statin dosage.
I was on high statin levels and experienced queeziness. After a settling period of about 4 months
I asked my doctor if I could half the dose and he agreed.....And I eventually got it down even further. For me the bottom line was a general concern re long term side effects. But I make sure I daily
exercise, walk & eat right and definately no booze/smokes. My stroke was almost 3 years ago.
I have been on high dose statins for 6 months now and fortunately have not had any side effects that I can't manage but am aware that some people can't them because of liver and /or heart damage but are aware of neural benefits of statins
Hi Ian and Sean,
Here is a bit more information about statins and stroke presented by Prof Richard Richard Lindley, past Chair of Stroke Foundation Clinical Council.
Hi Diana, Thankyou for posting the talk by Professor Richard Lindley as statins have been maligned in the press but the video has emphasied the importance of statins for majority of people who can tolerate them, and there are alternative drugs in the minority of people who can't toterate them.
Hi Diana, Thankyou for also posting the other videos and thank you to the stroke foundation where I have found a wealth of information.
