I'm still feeling dizzy most of the times after having a lateral medullary stroke 3 months ago. Why? What can I do about it?

Apart having to have a PEG tube for feeding, I'm OK. I can walk up to 10K every other day.

Hi,

We’re so sorry to hear you’ve had a stroke and are still experiencing dizziness. This can be common after specific types of stroke. We would suggest a review with your GP/neurologist and an assessment with a physio who is experienced in vestibular management. In many cases you can be given specific exercises to reduce the dizzy sensation that is often due to issues in the coordination of balance and positioning systems. You’re likely experiencing the dizziness due to a mismatch in processing of signals about balance and the positioning of eyes and head during movement as a result of the stroke.

It would also be interesting to get tips from other survivors in the community if they have anything else that helped them.

If you would like to discuss further don’t hesitate to call us on StrokeLine on 1800 787 653.

Best wishes Simone and Katherine (Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist for StrokeLine)
