Hi Nick,
I'm sorry to hear of your stroke and that you're experiencing these feelings of low mood.
Mood changes and depression are common to experience after stroke. You have done the right thing by discussing your mood with your GP and seeking their assistance in managing it. Anti-depressants are very useful in the treatment of moderate to severe depression. Medical professionals such as your GP are the best source of information in relation to what to take and how long to take it for. If have further questions about your anti-depressant making another appointment with your GP to discuss these things could be helpful. Pharmacists and other health professionals can also be useful sources of information about medications or you could seek a second opinion from another GP.
There are additional ways of managing mood changes such as depression. These include psychological therapies and lifestyle factors. Our Depression and anxiety after stroke fact sheet explains these treatments and lifestyle factors, such as exercise in more detail. There is also some information about anti-depressants in our podcast on Depression and anxiety after stroke.
