Hi there,
Thank you for your enquiry. The Clinical Guidelines for Stroke Management 2017 do not address how long after a stroke is it safe to have elective surgery. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide any specific advice to you.
We suggest speaking to your orthopaedic specialist/surgeon and ensuring that they are fully aware of your medical history, including your stroke and any medications you are currently taking. If you are on blood thinners, there needs to be discussion about coming off them prior to surgery and a clear plan. If your surgeon is unaware of how to manage this, they may need to consult closely with (or refer you to) a Stroke doctor or Neurologist for review.
A discussion about what your choices are, and what risks might be involved is important. Consideration may need to be given to the timing and possible changes (or cessation) of medications.
There is also the MedicineLine service, which provides information on how medicines work, how to take them, side effects and interactions, and storage. The number for MedicineLine is 1300 633 424.
I hope this information is helpful. If you have any further questions please feel free to call us on StrokeLine (1800 787 653)
Regards,
Kerrie
