Hi CHM,
We’re really sorry to hear that you’re going through this. Recovering from stroke can be incredibly challenging, especially without the support of formal rehabilitation and with additional complications like COVID-19. Did you mean to say you had a brainstem stroke?
We do know that stroke recovery time can vary significantly depending on some factors like: severity of the stroke, size, areas affected, and individual health factors like brain health and other medical history. However, we also know that the brain has a remarkable ability to adapt and reorganise itself, called neuroplasticity. This allows the brain to form new connections and pathways in response to learning, experience or injury. Neuroplasticity highlights the brain’s resilience and capacity for change. It means that with appropriate interventions, therapies, and practice, individuals can often recover or compensate for lost functions and adapt to new situations.
Feeling like you’ve deteriorated and struggling alone can be overwhelming, but you are not alone. Our StrokeLine team is here to help you get the supports and services you need for your recovery. Our service is free and confidential. Perhaps you would like to give us a call and speak to one of our nursing or allied health professionals. We can discuss your experience and concerns further that we may provide you more individualised advice and help you navigate what may feel like a complex journey.
Your GP is also a good point of contact to access additional services and supports you may need. Have you discussed your concerns with your GP?
Having a support team is crucial to rehabilitation and recovery. Physical support can ensure your safety and help with exercises. Emotional and mental support help cheer you on and keep you motivated.
We can assist you with connecting to local support groups, community health services, or online resources. If you have any friends, family, or community members you trust, reaching out to them for assistance might also be beneficial.
We are here to listen and help. Again, we look forward to hearing from you on StrokeLine. We are available through 1800 787 653, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm AET.
Kind regards,
StrokeLine
