Firstly, I’m so sorry to hear about you and your husband’s experience. It sounds very frustrating and unclear.
It certainly sounds like with visual and speech changes that it may have been signs of stroke or a TIA. It appears unusual that he hasn’t been referred for more tests given his presentation. The GP who arranged the referral to the stroke clinic and diagnosed a TIA may be the best person to continue further investigations or you could get a second opinion from another GP or a referral to a private neurologist. We would suggest getting the GP to refer for a CT scan and potentially other tests to rule out stroke. You can read more about the common tests performed after stroke/TIA on page 10 of our My Stroke Journey booklet.
This is definitely worth chasing up and if you are unhappy with the treatment from the stroke clinic you could write a written complaint via the patient liaison office of the hospital.
It is also a good idea to go through the risk factors in our prevention booklet to see if your husband has any others. Blood pressure is certainly one of the major risk factors and getting this under control is essential to minimise his risk. Here is some more information on high blood pressure and stroke. If he presents with further signs of stroke please call 000 immediately and let them know he has presented with similar symptoms before. It may help to keep a log of events/symptoms, including headache and blood pressure with dates and times and get a copy of any follow-up investigations or discharge summaries from the stroke clinic and GP.
Please don’t hesitate to call us on StrokeLine to discuss further on 1800 787 653 Mon-Fri 9am-5pm.
Best wishes,
Simone (Occupational Therapist – StrokeLine)
