Hi Anthony,
Thank you for contacting the Stroke Foundation.
Having a loved one in hospital can be really challenging and the situation you and your family are in sounds really tough. You are right that depression is very common after stroke. Did your brother have any mental health issues before his stroke and has he been medicated for his mood since his stroke?
Here are a few things that we suggest:
• Request a Psychiatrist review with his Neurologist or the Nurse Unit Manager if this hasn’t already been done. If the hospital has a Psychologist we would also recommend a referral.
• Request a Social Worker review if your brother or parents haven’t already seen one. Their role is to help support the patient and family during difficult times like this. It’s important for your brother, you and your parents to have access to adequate support during this challenging time.
• Contact the Stroke Recovery Association NSW. They might be able to organise a liaison or possibly a stroke survivor to go to the hospital to speak with your brother and parents to offer some advice and support. Their contact number is: 1300 650 594.
In terms of what you can do personally:
• Be there for your brother to support him even though you don’t support his current decisions. Being a support rather than trying to coerce him into accepting treatment if you believe he won’t budge may be more beneficial and better for your relationship with him. Is your brother able to open up to talk to you about what is going on for him?
• Focus on what he liked doing before and try to build hope. See if you can take him out to the garden or cafeteria for a change of environment. Would he be tempted to eat something in particular – even if it was brought in from home?
• Try tapping into what is important to him – what are his values? Are they family, friends or other interests? Over time you might find he starts to come around.
If your brother has access to a tablet or smart phone in hospital you could show him EnableMe to help him understand that depression is common after stroke but there is help available and there is great hope. Improvements can occur for months and years after a stroke.
Please feel free to call StrokeLine to speak to a health professional on 1800 787 653 (Monday to Friday 9am-5pm). We are also happy to speak with your brother and parents.
Kind regards,
Chloe
