I’m so sorry to hear about your mum. I’m glad her swallowing and chewing has improved. It’s not uncommon for stroke survivors to experience a loss of appetite after stroke for a number of reasons. It could be directly related to the area of the brain affected, low mood or side effects of medication. Have you spoken to the dietitian about her loss of appetite and any ideas they have about improving it and whether supplements are needed? You may also like to check out our section on Food and Nutrition and our Food and Nutrition fact sheet. It would be beneficial for the Doctor to review possible side effects of medication and liaise with the psychologist about whether mood could be impacting on her loss of appetite. What is your mum’s sleep like? This might also be something worth discussing with the nurses.
Taste can also be affected after stroke. Are you able to bring in home cooked foods if the hospital food is not appetising? Is there a hospital café for a change of scenery? Is your mum having cravings for anything in particular? Keep liaising with the allied health team (nurses, speech pathologist and dietitian in particular) and hopefully her appetite will slowly improve over time.

Simone. Thank you so much for this information. Since my original post -my mum's appetite has greatly improved. She's on resource protein supplements and the doctor started her on a mild antidepressant which helped her to sleep
better, settled her deep anxiety, reinvigorated her appetite, and gave her much better social skills. Mum had always been very sociable but after her stroke she had no desire to get out of bed, felt dizzy and disoriented. Now we take her for twice daily wheelchair strolls and she loves it. So thanks to the medical team for finding a good solution. She still has a long journey ahead but is calmer and gaining weight and enjoying each moment with us. Xx
Karen . Such positive news of your Mum. When I had the stroke in 2012 I was much like your Mum. Loss of appetite and weight. I was put onto a protein drink thickened because of swallowing problems. That drink I did not like one bit. Gradually my appetite improved and my enjoyment of food returned. Always I managed to find food on the menu that appealed.. I am sure your Mum will go from strength to strength. Jenny
