My speech has returned but I have a very strong accent which alters. Sometimes it's Italian, French, German Slavic changes frequently. Am I alone in this?

I had my stroke in 2013 had a good recovery returned to work for 2 shifts then had an extension of my stroke which caused much more pronounced left sided deficits. I also initially was only able to stutter intelligently but now my speech has returned but I have a very strong accent which alters. Sometimes it's Italian, French, German Slavic changes frequently. I am an Aussie born here and find this frustrating .It has not gone back to aussie in 18 months since I regained speech and wonder if there are others out there that have the same experience? I find this a very strange anomaly and feel at times I have lost all of my original identity

Thank you for your question. We are sorry to hear about your changes in speech. That does sound very frustrating, and having the feeling of losing your original identity must be extremely challenging. It must feel very strange as language shapes our perceptions and our world.

 

A change to accent following a stroke is rare but it can occur. Have you seen a speech pathologist? Are you part of a communication or stroke support group? If not, would this be something you would be interested in find out more about?
