Stroke can affect our senses by changing our brain’s ability to process information. This can affect all levels of the auditory pathway and lead to hearing reception and/or perception deficits. Exposure to certain sounds may actually help the hypersensitivity more than limiting the exposure to sounds, as it will help rebuild tolerance to sound. However, a qualified physician, GP or Ear, Nose, Throat Specialist (ENT) or hearing healthcare clinician, such as an audiologist should be consulted to get an accurate diagnosis, and management plan, which may include delivery of treatment specific to hypersensitivity, or hyperacusis as it is also known.
