Hi Robyn,
It is totally normal to feel anxious before an operation, and seeking information can help.
I recommend speaking to a stroke doctor about coming off your blood thinners before the operation. Your doctor will be able to arrange the timing and any possible changes to medications. A discussion with you doctor about what your choices are, and what risks might be involved is important.
There is also the MedicineLine service, which provides information on how medicines work, how to take them, side effects and interactions, and storage. The number for MedicineLine is 1300 633 424.
Please feel free to call us on StrokeLine (1800 787 653) if you have any further questions about stroke prevention, treatment, recovery and support.
Wishing you all the best,
Kirsty

Hi Robyn,
I hope the operation went well and interested how you came off plavix before your operation. I am on plavix as well in addition to low dose aspirin which are both blood thinners.
All the best
Ian
Hi
i am having a ballon dilation to my oesophagus on the 17th July and have been told need to come off the blood thinners for a week and to take aspirin instead. Like the original poster I am concerned.
Hi Peter,
It’s understandable to feel concerned about coming off your blood thinners before your operation. Have you spoken to your treating team (your local GP, surgeon or neurologist) about your concerns? If you haven’t already, it’s a good idea to speak with the people involved in your operation to get a better understanding of the risks involved and weigh up the risk of coming off them for surgery versus not having the surgery. You need to feel as reassured and informed as possible to make the right decision for you. Write down any questions that you have and get them answered before the operation and before coming off the blood thinners.
If you feel you need to speak to someone about managing the worry, you could get your GP to refer you to a psychologist for strategies to help you navigate this.
I hope your operation goes well. If you would like to speak to someone about this in more detail, you are welcome to ring our StrokeLine on 1800 787 653, Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm.
Best wishes,
Meredith (StrokeLine)
Hi Robyn
I had to have a hysterectomy a couple of years ago. The gyno rang my neurologist to seek their opinion as to whether I should come off me blood thinner. He did this without any questioning from me and I found it quite reassuring tht there had been this communication. Maybe you could suggest your surgeon do the same.
Best wishes Toni
