I would suggest getting a Speech Pathology referral for a communication assessment. The stroke survivor could apply for a Chronic Disease Management Plan via the GP to access 5 Medicare subsidised sessions. The Speech Pathologist would then be able to recommend appropriate apps and set-up. You can find a local Speech Pathologist . If this isn’t an option you could check out some of the apps listed on our site under speech and language, however it is best to be assessed first to ensure the appropriate app is being used. Another alternative is to contact the Independent Living Centre for further advice on 1300 885 886 as they have apps listed on their website and health professionals who could also assist. The Australian Aphasia Association is also a good resource and have lists of communication groups in each state.
I hope this helps. If you would like to speech to our Speech Pathologist you can call StrokeLine on 1800 787 653 Thurs, Fri 9am-5pm.

My wife has expressive dysphasia and has tried many apps, with varying degrees of success. A speech therapist will help but it is probably best to try as many as possible to see how useful they are. Most are free or cost $2-$5 so experimenting isn't costly. Beware though that some are very expensive so avoid those until you are certain that they'll help.

My Partner has Aphasia post stroke and we were put onto an App by his speech therapist called Speech Sounds Australia, you can download it from the App Store - this was recommended by his speech therapist. There is also an online program called React, it is based out of the UK but you can trial it for 3 days and then subscribe to it if you like it.

Don't rely on apps alone as the problem is mostly context specific the book teaching talking is def worth reading to get ideas on how to help .The main thing to do is to keep selecting goals to work on like names of important people ,yes no or consistent ability to non verbally express this ,help, anger pain ,hunger, thirst ,toilet all the basics good luck.
